Music and art have a lot in common. They share a similar vocabulary. A trumpet can have a "bright" sound, for instance, and colors can be said to be "harmonious".

Harmony (Song No. 1) was my first attempt to create a sort of "visual music". I was very musical as a child, and if I had not decided that art was my calling, I probably would have tried my hand at musical composition.

Works like Harmony represent the compromise I have made. I've lost all my ability to sing or play instruments, but instead, I've let musical principles inform my artwork.

Harmony isn't entirely successful as "visual music", but it was a major turning point for me. I still love its simplicity and subtlety, and I think that years from now, when I look back on my artistic career, I'll be able to say that it began with this piece.
